Exploring Uncertainty
The 2023 Theme

Through our conference, we chose to shed light on the positive aspects of uncertainty, highlighting its potential for shaping a brighter future. In Helsinki, we brought together experts, researchers, educators and students for talks and workshops.
The conference was a hub for exploring the role of information design in decision-making. We delved into profound discussions, sharing insights from research, practice-based design research, projects, and ideas. Our goal was to  pave the way for new solutions.

About the Visual Identity
Visual Language

Within the overarching theme of visualising uncertainty, we delved into specific categories to provide deeper insights:
      1. Energy & Environment
      2. Narratives for Complexity
      3. Perspectives on Truth & Data
      4. Demystifying AI
      5. Open Science

Each theme was attributed key words, encapsulating the essence of their respective topics, totaling 33 words.

Colour Palette

Given our positive perspective on the theme of uncertainty, the color palette and branding concepts reflect hope, playfulness, open-mindedness, and positivity. The backdrop of the branding is presented in black and white, while color is introduced to symbolize our themes.
VK23’s Map of interest

Each of the 33 key words was meticulously assigned a unique mark. Within a predefined grid, these elements enabled the creation of an engaging map of interest, capable of representing either the professional endeavors or the interests of guest and attendee.

Typography

Through carefully curated animations, our letters undergo transformation, momentarily glitching before settling into their refined form. This animation is a central component of our branding, seamlessly integrated into our communication across social media, videos, and conference presentations.
Additionally, our website features interactive hover effects, allowing for a dynamic and engaging user experience. This approach to typography not only enhances aesthetics but also reflects the dynamic and participartory nature of the  branding and the uncertainties we navigate at VK23.

Map of Interests
Badges — Generative Design

VK23 offered personalized badges tailored to each guest. By completing a questionnaire after bying their ticket, attendees would provide data then entered into a coded platform we designed. Each map generated was then printed onto individual badges, creating a tangible representation of the attendee's unique interests in our topics.

Upon arrival at the conference, guests received their personalized badge, enhancing their sense of belonging and connection to the VK23 community.
