Appearing clean, the virtual world is much more polluting than one might imagine.The virtual world has a voracious consumption of electricity which comes up against the reduction of energy resources. Its carbon footprint makes it possible to assess the pressures of this pollution on the climate and shows that it affects all ecosystems.
Furthermore, ongoing projects to put constellations of telecommunications satellites into orbit have the operating principle of saturating nearby space to ensure global coverage of our planet. A problem for astronomers who could quickly lose the possibility of carrying out major research campaigns of worldwide scale. It is above all a loss of the intellectual and emotional link which unites humanity to the cosmos and allows us to understand the limits of our planet at a time when its equilibrium has never been so threatened.
